All power supplies should be equipped with a variety of protections that protect them from failure as well as the system that they are powering. In some cases, they are listed in the specifications. OVP (Overvoltage protection)
If the voltages on the single lines exceed a specific tolerance value, the LED driver automatically switches off. A common cause of this problem is a poor connection between the output terminal and the LED. The failure of a pass transistor could easily put excess voltage on ICs. In most cases, switchers fail to produce any output at all when they fail.
SCP (Short-circuit protection)
This feature prevents damage to the LED driver's core components in the event of a short circuit.
OPP (Overload protection)
This protection function is activated if the LED driver is unable to provide enough power when the LED driver is oversized.
OCP (Overcurrent protection)
A LED driver automatically switches off if the load on a single line exceeds the amount indicated.
OTP (Over Temperature Protection)
An over-temperature protection device (OTP) usually consists of a thermistor attached to the secondary heat sink (the fan control unit usually uses a thermistor in the same heat sink). The thermistor informs the protection circuit of the temperature of the heat sink, and if this exceeds a specified threshold, the output power is shut off. Overloading or failure of the cooling fan can cause an excessive temperature, therefore OTP prevents (further) damage to the LED driver.How does that help improve your LED drivers? They ensure the safety of your light system, as well as the LED driver. The driver will not be damaged and protects itself. However, the safety function is not a safety function. Several extra components are required in the system, such as a MOV for system protection, as well as the correct setting of the safety functions. If not, the module will be of no use to you.
