Waterproof Stepper Motors and Servo Motors: Principles, IP Ratings, and Product Overview
What is a Waterproof Stepper Motor?
A waterproof stepper motor is a type of stepper motor specifically designed for harsh industrial environments involving high humidity, water spray, heavy dust exposure, or temporary water immersion. Compared with standard stepper motors, waterproof stepper motors feature specialized sealing structures, waterproof connectors, and corrosion-resistant materials to ensure reliable operation under demanding conditions. Waterproof stepper motors typically offer a high IP protection rating, effectively preventing moisture, dust, and oil contaminants from entering the motor housing and damaging precision internal components such as windings, bearings, and encoders. Common applications of waterproof stepper motors include: CNC machine tools, food packaging equipment, medical automation equipment, lithium battery and renewable energy equipment, water treatment systems, outdoor automation equipment, semiconductor and photovoltaic equipment. Compared with standard motors, waterproof motors are better suited for industrial environments with high humidity, heavy dust exposure, and frequent washdowns.
How does a Waterproof Stepper Motor Achieve Waterproof Protection?
Waterproof stepper motors achieve their protective performance through the following key design features:
1. Sealing Structure Design
High-performance sealing rings and waterproof sealing compounds are used at critical connection points such as the end caps, flanges, and motor housing joints to prevent moisture and dust from entering the motor interior. In addition, the motor shaft is typically equipped with a high-quality oil seal to improve waterproof protection around the rotating shaft.
2. Waterproof Cable Connection Design
In standard stepper motors, cable outlet areas are often vulnerable to water ingress. To address this issue, waterproof stepper motors typically use: waterproof connectors, aviation connectors, integrated sealed cables. These designs help prevent moisture from entering the motor through the cable entry points.
3. Corrosion-Resistant Materials
Some waterproof motors use stainless steel output shafts, corrosion-resistant housings, and special protective coatings to improve durability in humid, salt spray, and corrosive environments.
Introduction to Motor IP Protection Ratings
When selecting a waterproof motor, the IP protection rating is one of the most important parameters to consider. IP (Ingress Protection) ratings consist of two digits: the first digit indicates the dust protection level; the second digit indicates the water protection level. In industrial automation applications, the most common waterproof motor ratings are IP65, IP67, and IP68.
| Protection Rating | Dust Protection | Waterproof Protection | Typical Application Scenarios | Selection Guide |
| IP65 | Completely protected against dust ingress. | Protected against low-pressure water jets from any direction. | Suitable for CNC equipment, automated production lines, food processing machinery (washdown environments), and outdoor equipment. Ideal for general humid and water spray environments. | Suitable for general industrial applications requiring protection against water spray, mist, or humid conditions. |
| IP67 | Completely protected against dust ingress. | Protected against temporary immersion in water (typically up to 1 meter for 30 minutes). | Suitable for car wash equipment, water treatment systems, wet grinding equipment, and environments exposed to prolonged rain. Ideal for applications with a risk of temporary immersion. | Suitable for applications where equipment may accidentally fall into water or need to withstand temporary immersion. |
| IP68 | Completely protected against dust ingress. | Suitable for continuous underwater operation (depth and duration specified by the manufacturer). | Suitable for underwater robots, marine exploration equipment, and deep-water automation systems. Ideal for equipment requiring long-term underwater operation. | The preferred solution for long-term underwater applications. The required submersion depth and operating cycle should be clearly defined during motor selection. |
How to Choose a Suitable Waterproof Stepper Motor?
When selecting a waterproof stepper motor, it is recommended to focus on the following parameters: IP protection rating, output torque, motor size, control method, operating temperature, encoder availability, and corrosion resistance. For applications that only require protection against water spray, an IP65 stepper motor is typically sufficient. If there is a risk of temporary immersion, an IP67 waterproof motor is recommended. For long-term underwater operation, an IP68 waterproof motor should be selected.
